Regina Commemorates Remembrance Day with Emotional Ceremonies

URGENT UPDATE: Regina experienced a poignant moment of silence this morning as the city commemorated Remembrance Day with heartfelt ceremonies across the Queen City. Thousands gathered to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service to Canada, with both traditional and unique events taking place.

At Victoria Park, a ceremonial parade surrounding the cenotaph drew hundreds of attendees. The event featured the laying of wreaths to honor the fallen. Retired Major Brad Hrycyna, who served for 37 years, shared his personal connection to this solemn day, recalling his great uncle who lost his life during the First World War. “On July 19, at about 2:45 a.m., a German artillery round landed in the trench where he was stationed, killing him and another soldier,” Hrycyna revealed. “I always remember him. I’ve been to his grave site in France.”

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, a conflict in which more than one million Canadians served, and 45,000 gave their lives. “Now that World War II veterans are no longer amongst us in southern Saskatchewan, it’s vital we uphold the legacy they left behind,” said Aaron Kaytor, Commanding Officer for HMCS Queen Regina’s Naval Reserve Division.

In a different part of the city, residents celebrated the day through music at a sold-out winter wartime tribute concert hosted by The Nightingales. The concert, featuring popular songs from the First and Second World Wars, captivated an audience of nearly 400 people at Darke Hall. “It’s celebration music by the Andrews Sisters and tunes from a bygone era,” explained Megan McCormick, business development manager for the Darke Hall Society. “The event sold out very quickly, which shows strong community support for local artists.”
