URGENT UPDATE: Regina is reeling from the aftermath of a severe thunderstorm that unleashed at least 50 millimetres of rain this past weekend, leading to significant flooding in key areas of the city. City officials, including Carolyn Kilam, director of water, waste, and environment, confirmed this alarming development during a press briefing earlier today.

Floodwaters have forced the temporary closure of the Ring Road near the Ross Avenue overpass, creating hazardous conditions for drivers. “We are actively monitoring the situation, and road closures are necessary to ensure public safety,” Kilam stated. This proactive measure reflects the city’s commitment to protecting residents amid the unpredictable nature of flooding events.

As rainwater inundated the wastewater system, the city reported that approximately 1.3 megalitres of wastewater discharged into Wascana Creek. “Responding to a flooding event during a rainstorm can be very challenging because it is so dynamic,” Kilam explained, acknowledging the complexities faced by city crews during emergencies.

To address the flooding, the city deployed message signs on the Ring Road to alert drivers to the dangers of flooded underpasses, while also coordinating with the fire and protective services and the Regina Police Service to disseminate crucial information quickly.

In a bid to prevent future flooding issues, Regina is investing over $240 million in its wastewater and stormwater infrastructure over the next five years. “This investment is critical to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events,” Kilam affirmed.

Despite the intensity of Saturday’s storm, city officials anticipate only minimal long-term impacts, with ongoing assessments to determine the full extent of the damage. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and exercise caution while traveling through affected areas.

As the situation develops, Regina’s commitment to improving its infrastructure underscores the urgency of addressing climate-related challenges. Stay tuned for more updates as city officials continue to respond to this unfolding situation.
