Regina Rams Make History with 47-23 Dominance Over Golden Bears

BREAKING: The Regina Rams achieved a historic feat on Friday night, defeating the Alberta Golden Bears with a commanding score of 47-23 at Leibel Field. This marks the first time in Canada West history that two players rushed for over 100 yards in a single game.
In an electrifying performance, Marshall Erichsen led the Rams with 171 yards on 18 carries, while Christian Katende contributed 112 yards on just 12 attempts. The Rams are now off to a perfect start, holding a record of 2-0 this season.
“It was an outstanding effort by the offensive line,” said head coach Mark McConkey in a post-game statement. “As a former receiver, I want to throw the ball 60 times a game, but they just make it so easy to call a run.”
The game began with the Rams trailing 7-2 after a series of early turnovers, including a fumble by Erichsen. However, the Rams quickly regained their footing. A pivotal 36-yard run by Erichsen set up a rushing touchdown from quarterback Noah Pelletier, bringing the score to 10-9 in favor of the Golden Bears after the first quarter.
Just seconds into the second quarter, Erichsen dashed 17 yards for a touchdown, restoring the Rams’ lead at 16-10. Erichsen and Katende credited their offensive line for creating the opportunities. “They gave us such great holes,” Erichsen remarked. Katende added, “It’s just a testament to the hard work this offense put in over the off-season.”
As the game progressed, the Rams held a 23-17 lead into halftime. The momentum see-sawed until the Rams executed a meticulous 12-play, 87-yard drive, capped off by a two-yard touchdown from Katende.
Despite the loss, Alberta’s quarterback Eli Hettinger had a strong showing, completing 28 of 36 passes for 310 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. The critical interception came at a crucial juncture when Hettinger’s pass was picked off by Carson Sombach and returned for a school-record 109 yards for a touchdown.
“[Alberta was] throwing some things at us that we haven’t seen before. We’re smart. We’re a veteran group,” said McConkey, highlighting his team’s readiness throughout the match.
With their victory, the Rams improve to 2-0 and will now prepare for a clash against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver on Friday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. PT. Fans and players alike are eager to see if the Rams can maintain their momentum in the upcoming matchup.
