Residents Return Home After Month-Long Fire Displacement in Toronto
UPDATE: Residents of two condominiums in Toronto’s Thorncliffe Park neighborhood are finally returning home after being displaced for over a month due to a major fire. Starting at 6 p.m. on Sunday, some tenants of 11 Thorncliffe Park Dr. received clearance from city officials, bringing relief to those affected.
On November 27, a devastating five-alarm fire erupted at 11 Thorncliffe Park Dr. and quickly spread to the adjoining building at 21 Overlea Blvd., forcing the evacuation of more than 400 units. Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop called the incident “unprecedented,” labeling it the most complex fire the city has ever encountered. The blaze ignited within the walls between the two towers and smoldered for over two weeks before it was officially declared extinguished.
Residents are expressing mixed emotions upon their return. One tenant shared with CP24, “We’re very discombobulated, living out of bags, and the unknowns,” highlighting frustrations over the lack of communication throughout the ordeal. However, her partner added, “At least we’re able to go home. That’s all that matters.”
The return to their homes will occur under a “structured re-occupancy schedule” designed to ensure safety and comply with city regulations. Building management has requested residents’ cooperation as they navigate this process.
While some units are now cleared for habitation, 16 units remain part of an exclusion zone and cannot yet be occupied. The affected units include 303, 304, 403, 404, 503, 504, 603, 604, 703, 704, 803, 804, 903, 904, 1003, and 1004. There is currently no update on when residents of 21 Overlea will be permitted to return.
City officials are continuing to review findings from engineering assessments conducted by property management firms. As developments unfold, residents and their families are hopeful for a swift resolution to this challenging situation. Stay tuned for more updates as we follow this story closely.
