UPDATE: The 11th Annual Forever Young 8K Run in Richmond has shattered previous records with 322 participants taking part on September 7, 2023. This significant turnout at the Richmond Olympic Oval not only showcases the community’s commitment to fitness but also raised $3,500 for charities focused on senior well-being.

This year’s event was a resounding success, featuring runners aged between 55 and 94, including notable participant Gwen McFarlan, a 91-year-old marathoner from Richmond. The event drew international competitors from Scotland, France, and Japan, highlighting its growing popularity.

The race began at the Richmond Olympic Oval and took runners along River Road, extending to Terra Nova Rural Park before returning. For the first time, the event included a 5K run, attracting 75 participants. Lisa McDougall claimed victory in the 5K with a remarkable finish time of 24 minutes and 39 seconds, while Carl Chen secured first place in the 8K, completing the race in 34 minutes and 58 seconds.

John Young, the 80-year-old founder of the Forever Young Club, emphasized the spirit of the event, stating, “The Forever Young 8K continues to prove that age is no barrier to energy, achievement, and community.” His words resonate as the event not only celebrates physical fitness but also fosters new friendships and unforgettable experiences among participants.

With the success of this year’s race, anticipation builds for next year’s event, scheduled for September 6, 2024. The Forever Young Club is dedicated to promoting fitness and social connections among seniors, and this event exemplifies their mission.
