Riders Face Bombers in Urgent Labour Day Classic Showdown
UPDATE: The highly anticipated Labour Day Classic kicks off today at 5 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, where the Saskatchewan Roughriders host their fierce rivals, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. This year marks the 42nd consecutive season the Bombers face the Riders on Labour Day, a tradition dating back to 1982.
The atmosphere is electric as fans eagerly await this monumental clash. Riders’ head coach Corey Mace, who experienced the rivalry firsthand last year, emphasized the significance of this matchup, stating, “You are just extremely grateful for the people who work their tails off and are willing to spend money to come out and support the club.”
Riders’ quarterback Trevor Harris shared his emotional connection to the game, recalling how local businesses close their doors for the occasion. “It’s those things you watch in movies and long to experience,” he said. “I stopped and teared up.”
Today’s game not only holds local importance but resonates across the CFL, with fans from coast to coast excited for the showdown. “It’s an important weekend for the CFL,” said Bombers’ head coach Mike O’Shea.
In a significant lineup change, the Riders have confirmed the return of receiver Ajou Ajou, who just rejoined the team after a brief stint with the Indianapolis Colts. Despite limited practice, Ajou is poised to make an impact. “I’m coming home to fans and people who love me,” he said. “I’m all for it and happy.”
Additionally, Riders’ kicker Brett Lauther will handle kicking duties today, just days after welcoming his newborn daughter. Lauther, who has struggled this season with a 65% success rate on field goals, recognizes the pressure but remains focused: “We’re going to have our fans at our backs.”
Fans are buzzing with anticipation, and Harris noted the community’s enthusiasm as he’s been approached multiple times this week. “Six or seven people stopped me and said, ‘Hey, big game this weekend,’” he recounted.
As for the Bombers, quarterback Zach Collaros is excited to welcome back key offensive players, including receivers Nic Demski and Dalton Schoen. “It’s huge,” Collaros remarked. “Whether it’s pre-snap or post-snap, having [Schoen] on the field is a luxury.”
The historical rivalry is intense, with Saskatchewan holding a record of 38-21 against Winnipeg in previous Labour Day matchups. Today’s game is critical not only for standings but for the pride of both teams and their passionate fanbases.
As the countdown to kickoff continues, both teams are ready to lay it all on the line in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. Fans are urged to arrive early to soak in the atmosphere and support their teams in this storied rivalry.
