Rielly Aims for Redemption After Tough Season with Leafs

UPDATE: Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly is on a mission to turn his performance around after a disappointing season. Speaking outside the team’s practice facility, Rielly revealed he has undergone significant self-reflection this summer, determined to reclaim his status as a top player.
Last season, Rielly, who carries a $7.5 million salary cap hit through 2029-30, faced an alarming slump. After scoring only once in 40 games from November 8 to February 6, he went the final 24 games of the regular season without a goal. “My game dropped,” Rielly admitted, expressing disappointment in his performance.
Rielly, who finished the season with just 41 points (seven goals and 34 assists) in 82 games, had a “real honest chat” with Leafs general manager Brad Treliving after the playoffs. Following that conversation, he engaged in several heart-to-heart talks, including with his wife, Tessa Virtue, a three-time Olympic champion. “I leaned on it,” he said, recognizing the value of her insights during high-pressure situations.
Determined to improve, Rielly focused on a comprehensive approach to his training this offseason. “It’s going to be a big-picture thing,” he emphasized. “I took this offseason as the first step in being as dialed as I could be in every aspect.” His commitment has not gone unnoticed by teammates, with forward Nicolas Roy noting Rielly’s exceptional energy during informal skating sessions.
Goaltender Anthony Stolarz praised Rielly’s mindset, stating, “The biggest thing for him is going out there and playing freely. His talent, his mindset is just perfect for this market.” Teammate Scott Laughton echoed this sentiment, describing Rielly as “unbelievable” and one of his favorite teammates.
Rielly’s preparation also included adapting to personal changes, as he and Virtue welcomed their son, McCormick, in July 2024. Reflecting on fatherhood, Rielly noted, “It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me,” while acknowledging the challenges it brings. He aims to channel this new perspective into his performance on the ice.
As the 2025-26 season approaches, Rielly is determined to leave no stone unturned. “I completely committed to doing everything I could,” he stated, indicating his readiness to elevate his game. The Leafs hope to see a revitalized Rielly as they prepare for a crucial season ahead.
In related news, Matias Maccelli has been given the first opportunity to fill Mitch Marner‘s former spot on the right side of the top line with Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies. Maccelli, who scored 57 points last season, is focusing on building chemistry as the team gears up for training camp.
Additionally, negotiations continue for Stolarz’s contract extension as he approaches unrestricted free agency next summer. “Our ultimate goal is to win the Stanley Cup,” he said, expressing his desire to finalize a deal before the season begins.
This report on Rielly’s preparations and the upcoming season is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
