Royals Surge Past Blue Jays 9-3 Behind Witt and Wacha

UPDATE: The Kansas City Royals dominated the Toronto Blue Jays with a decisive 9-3 victory in the opening game of their three-game series on August 1, 2025. Star infielder Bobby Witt Jr. delivered a game-changing three-run homer, while veteran pitcher Michael Wacha showcased an impressive performance on the mound.
Witt’s powerful hit off Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman marked the second of four home runs launched by the Royals, who have now won their last three games, improving their record to 55-55. The Blue Jays, currently at 64-47, faced challenges without star player George Springer, who is sidelined with a concussion.
The game kicked off with a thrilling start as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. blasted a 428-foot home run in the first inning, giving the Blue Jays an early lead. However, the momentum quickly shifted when Mike Yastrzemski, making his debut for the Royals after being traded from the San Francisco Giants, answered back with a two-run homer in the second inning, putting Kansas City ahead for good.
Witt’s pivotal three-run homer in the third inning extended the Royals’ lead to four runs, solidifying their control over the game. Wacha, 34, pitched a stellar eight innings, allowing just two hits after the initial home run, with no walks and five strikeouts. Gausman managed to complete six innings but gave up five runs on six hits.
In an added twist, Toronto’s reliever Mason Fluharty conceded a solo shot to Salvador Perez and a two-run homer to Adam Frazier during the Royals’ four-run ninth inning. Addison Barger responded with a two-run shot for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
“The team is showing great resilience and energy,” said Royals manager.
As the Royals look to maintain their winning streak, the Blue Jays have now dropped four of their last five games, with a record of 9-6 since the All-Star break. The return of Daulton Varsho from a two-month injury layoff was a highlight for Toronto, although he struggled at the plate.
UP NEXT: The series continues on Saturday with Max Scherzer (1-1) taking the mound for the Blue Jays against the Royals’ Noah Cameron (5-4). Fans are eagerly anticipating how both teams will adjust following this high-scoring opener.
This report highlights the latest developments in the Royals’ successful campaign, leaving fans excited for the next matchup.
