Russian Cargo Plane Moves at Toronto Airport After 43 Months

BREAKING: A Russian cargo plane, the Antonov AN-124, was spotted moving at Toronto Pearson International Airport last week after being stationary for over 43 months. The plane, seized by the Canadian federal government in June 2023, has been parked on the tarmac since February 2022 following sanctions imposed due to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
Video footage shared on social media platform Reddit shows the massive aircraft slowly traversing the airport grounds last Friday. Officials have confirmed that the plane has since returned to its “designated location,” but the exact reasons for its brief movement remain partly shrouded in mystery.
Sean Davidson, a spokesperson for the airport, stated, “The aircraft was moved last week for a few hours to another location on airport grounds for routine checks led by the federal government.” Maintenance crews will be present around the AN-124 until September 29 to conduct necessary services.
Authorities from Public Services and Procurement Canada emphasized that the movement was strictly for maintenance purposes, but they declined to provide further information due to security concerns. This lack of transparency has left many wondering about the future of the Antonov AN-124.
Originally, this colossal aircraft arrived at Toronto to deliver COVID-19 tests and was expected to depart shortly after. However, its journey was cut short when Ottawa closed Canadian airspace to Russian aircraft operators, leading to its long-term immobilization in Toronto.
This unexpected movement of the AN-124 raises critical questions about the aircraft’s future and the implications of its possible use. With tensions high and ongoing concerns regarding military supplies to Ukraine, the Canadian government’s actions regarding this aircraft are under intense scrutiny.
As updates unfold, the situation remains fluid. CTV News Toronto has reached out to Global Affairs Canada for comments on the latest developments. Stay tuned for more updates as this story continues to evolve. The public and international community are on alert as the fate of this significant aircraft hangs in the balance.
