URGENT UPDATE: Local comedian Ryan Lachance is hosting a Wild West Charity Poker Tournament today, September 30, at the Royal Canadian Legion, Crescent Branch 240 in White Rock. This event kicks off at 1 p.m., with registration starting at noon.

This tournament is not just about poker; it’s a chance to support two significant causes. Half of the proceeds will go towards Lachance’s dream of an accessible comedy tour across Western Canada, while the other half benefits the Legion, a organization that is close to his heart.

Lachance, who lives with quad-spastic cerebral palsy and uses a motorized chair, aims to spread laughter and inspiration to audiences in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and B.C.’s Okanagan region. “This isn’t just a tour – it’s proof that anything is possible with community support and a sense of humour,” he said. His previous tournaments have already funded a van that enables him to travel more efficiently and a portable ramp that improves venue access.

Participants can join the fun for a $100 buy-in, and food and beverages will be available for purchase. A unique twist in this tournament is a special ‘bounty’ on Lachance’s head. “You can win a special prize package by knocking me out of the tournament,” he quipped.

Despite his modesty about his poker skills, Lachance has a strategic edge. “I like to think of myself as a pretty good poker player,” he admitted, having transitioned from casual games to tournaments. He emphasizes his passion for playing cards, saying, “Being a disabled kid growing up in Alberta, I played a lot of cards with friends and family.”

With his background in comedy, Lachance also brings valuable skills to the table. “I think my people skills help – comedy has helped me get used to reading people. When you make other players laugh, it’s easier to play against them,” he explained.
