Saanich Activates Emergency Weather Beds Amid Severe Cold Snap
URGENT UPDATE: Saanich has opened an Extreme Weather Response (EWR) shelter to combat severe cold conditions affecting the region. Announced on December 26, 2023, this new facility at Broadview United Church, located at 3703 St. Aidan’s St., provides 20 emergency overnight shelter beds for those in need.
This initiative, operated by Our Place Society with support from Saanich and funding through BC Housing’s Extreme Weather Response program, addresses the urgent need for safe and warm spaces as cold temperatures continue. These shelter beds will remain available as long as the weather meets the EWR activation criteria, which includes freezing temperatures, significant rainfall, and snowfall.
In addition to the EWR beds, Saanich offers a total of 50 shelter spaces at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, consisting of 25 temporary winter shelter beds and 25 permanent spaces. Residents seeking warmth during this extreme weather can also access Saanich recreation centers and the municipal hall during operating hours. Facilities include Saanich Commonwealth Place, Gordon Head Recreation Centre, Cedar Hill Recreation and Arts Centre, and G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre. Note that operating hours may vary due to staffing levels during these pressing conditions.
The situation in Saanich is dire, and officials are urging community members to utilize these resources if they are in need of shelter. For those looking for more information on facility hours and services, please visit saanich.ca/recreation.
Authorities are closely monitoring the weather, and the community is encouraged to stay updated on the latest developments. The swift response from local organizations and government underscores the commitment to ensuring safety and support for vulnerable populations during this critical time.
As the cold weather persists, Saanich residents are reminded of the importance of community support and vigilance. Please share this information to help those in need find shelter and warmth during this extreme weather event.
