UPDATE: Major renovations have begun at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool, as workers break ground on a new waterslide, replacing the original after 32 years. This significant upgrade has prompted the aquatic center to close entirely, affecting access for community members until October 27.

Construction commenced following a thorough review by engineers, who determined that the aging slide needed full replacement. “It’s sort of a pivotal moment. I grew up in Saanich myself and came to this facility when I was a teenager. It does feel monumental to see the slide coming apart,” said Jennifer Jakobsen, manager of Saanich Commonwealth Place.

The new slide, with an anticipated cost of approximately $1 million, will feature exciting twists and turns while lowering the minimum height requirement for riders to 42 inches, allowing more children to enjoy the attraction. Alongside the slide renovations, all pools will be drained for essential inspections during the closure.

Jakobsen acknowledged the impact of the nine-week closure, stating, “We recognize the impact it has on the community and want to maximize the benefit of that closure period.” The facility is set to close its doors completely tomorrow, with a partial reopening for weight room access planned for September 2. The full reopening is expected on October 27, allowing families to create new memories on the updated slide.

As the community eagerly awaits the return of this beloved feature, the Saanich Commonwealth Pool prepares for a transformative update, promising a reinvigorated experience for all visitors. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
