Saint John Hosts Final Powwow of 2025: 200 Dancers Celebrate
UPDATE: The Menahqesk Wabanaki Traditional Powwow has taken place today in Saint John, marking the 12th and final stop on New Brunswick’s powwow trail for 2025. This vibrant cultural celebration kicked off at 12 p.m. inside TD Station, attracting around 200 dancers and featuring over 40 Indigenous craft and food vendors.
The indoor venue offered a unique atmosphere, as noted by Possesom Paul, CEO of Double Curve Media, who organized the event. “I love outdoor powwows, but it’s really cool to have an indoor powwow,” he expressed. “Especially at this time of year, because you don’t know what the weather is going to be like… Take care of the people, the youth, and our elders.”
The grand entry showcased the rich traditions of Indigenous culture, with the host drum, Eastern Eagle, leading the way. Additional invited drums included Muskrat Singers, Wolastoq Singers, Sipu Boyz, Wabanaki Confederacy, and East Bay. The innovative setting allowed for creative performances, with enhanced lighting and sound enhancing the experience for attendees.
Planning for this year’s powwow began as soon as last year’s event concluded, which was notable as the first traditional powwow hosted in the city. Paul confirmed that preparations for the 2026 powwow are already underway. “We meet again next week to see what we can do for next year,” he stated.
Powwow season in New Brunswick officially commenced in June with events in Sitansisk (St. Mary’s), followed by several gatherings in July across various locations, including Pabineau and Oromocto. August and September saw more events in areas like Eel River Bar and Bouctouche, showcasing the region’s vibrant Indigenous culture.
This year’s final powwow not only celebrates tradition but emphasizes community, connection, and continuity for future generations. As the event wraps up, attendees reflect on the significance of preserving cultural heritage in a celebratory environment.
