Santa Claus’ Legacy Evolves Amid Retail Changes This Holiday Season
URGENT UPDATE: The holiday season is transforming as the beloved figure of Santa Claus evolves in response to changing shopping habits. New reports confirm that while traditional department stores fade, Santa remains a symbol of festive joy, now finding his place in malls and community events across Canada.
As the holiday shopping season kicks off, nostalgia for department store Santas like those at Eaton’s in Winnipeg is palpable. Linda Sigurdson recalls visiting Eaton’s in the late 1960s, where the store turned into a winter wonderland filled with fairy tale scenes. “It was magic to me,” Sigurdson told CTV News, reflecting on annual trips to see Santa.
The tradition of Santa Claus in retail spaces dates back to the 1840s in Philadelphia and reached Canada by December 2, 1905, when simultaneous parades in Toronto and Winnipeg introduced the iconic figure to the public. Historian Gerry Bowler explained, “The first Santa Claus Parade was in Toronto in 1905, but everybody forgets it was the same day in Winnipeg,” highlighting the festive rivalry.
Santa’s role evolved post-World War II, with families flocking to department stores like Eaton’s, The Bay, and Simpson’s to capture holiday memories. “People would flock downtown to check out the windows,” Bowler stated. As retail habits changed, many stores closed, but Santa’s spirit has adapted, now appearing in shopping malls and community events.
Amid these changes, Santa remains a vital figure, often engaging with children during special sensory sessions aimed at making visits less overwhelming, particularly for kids on the autism spectrum. “Lately, there’s been an effort to make the scene more welcoming,” noted Bowler.
Santa Alan Sideen, who dons the red suit each season, emphasizes the emotional connection he builds with children. He recalls poignant moments, such as a young boy wishing for his father’s return, underscoring the profound impact Santa can have during challenging times. “We always have to carry two pairs of pants, two pairs of gloves, and so on,” he joked, but the deeper stories resonate with him.
As the holiday season approaches, a 2022 survey by the Canadian Mental Health Association revealed that 52% of respondents felt the holidays impacted their mental health, with a quarter experiencing heightened anxiety. “It’s a time when there’s so much celebration and so much consumption that it’s easy to see what you have not,” said Shana Menkis, executive director of Sara Riel Inc.
Despite the challenges, Santa Claus continues to bring joy and hope. “It’s a beautiful responsibility that Santa has to have now in today’s world,” Sideen remarked. Bowler believes the enduring mythology of Santa embodies magic, gratitude, and consumerism, “It’s astonishing that parents continue this story from generation to generation.”
With shopping habits shifting towards online platforms, the future of Santa in retail remains uncertain. However, his presence in community events and malls provides a glimmer of holiday spirit, ensuring that the magic of Christmas continues amid changing times.
As December unfolds, families are reminded of the importance of connection, joy, and community, especially as they gather around Santa to share their wishes. The spirit of Santa Claus, while evolving, remains a cherished part of the holiday experience, inviting families to celebrate traditions that transcend mere commerce.
