Sarnia Officers Honored with Bravery Medal After Knife Attack
URGENT UPDATE: Two officers from the Sarnia Police Service received the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery after a harrowing knife attack during a welfare check last August. Detective Constable Karl Brown and Detective Constable Erik Ostenfeldt were honored in a ceremony held on Monday, October 23, 2023, in Toronto.
The incident unfolded on an evening in August 2022, when the officers responded to reports of a man screaming in pain at an apartment in Sarnia, a southwestern Ontario city. Upon arrival, they were confronted with a shocking scene. As they entered the unit, Const. Brown was ambushed and stabbed multiple times by the assailant, who was hiding behind a door.
Despite suffering serious injuries—including multiple stab wounds to his head, face, neck, and hand—Brown managed to fight back until Ostenfeldt intervened. The two officers worked together to disarm and secure the suspect, who has since been charged with attempted murder. The case remains ongoing in the courts.
After the attack, Brown was rushed to the hospital, where his partner provided lifesaving first aid while calling for help. This critical response undoubtedly saved Brown’s life, showcasing the extreme dangers faced by law enforcement officers.
In the award ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont and Solicitor General Michael Kerzner recognized the bravery of both officers. Sarnia’s police chief, Derek Davis, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “There is no such thing as a routine call.” His remarks highlight the unpredictable nature of police work and the inherent risks involved.
Both officers have since returned to active duty, a testament to their resilience and dedication. The bravery medals, which have been awarded since the 1970s, are granted based on nominations from police services and fire departments, evaluated by an independent body from the community.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges police officers face daily. As the community reflects on this event, it underscores the need for continued support and recognition of those who serve and protect.
