URGENT UPDATE: Fans from across Canada have converged on Winnipeg, Manitoba for the highly anticipated Grey Cup Festival, taking place ahead of the championship game this Sunday evening. The excitement is palpable as Saskatchewan Roughriders’ supporters proudly showcase their loyalty at this annual celebration.

“It’s something [we] never miss,” said long-time fan Kevin Schultz, who traveled from Carlyle, Saskatchewan. “It is always on the calendar, and my kids know to not decorate the house for Christmas until the Riders are out of the playoffs.” With a tradition spanning years, Schultz and his wife Shane reunite with friends like Dean Zacharias, who hails from near Edmonton, for this monumental event.

“I was born in Saskatchewan,” Dean shared. “That’s the way it is.” This year marks Dean’s 15th Grey Cup, a pivotal family reunion for the group. Fellow fans Ken and Tyler Hudgeon, along with Nancy Malone and others, gathered in matching tracksuits, representing their diverse roots from Edmonton to Calgary. Collectively, they boast over 50 Grey Cup appearances.

“All of Canada comes together in one place,” Malone expressed, emphasizing the camaraderie that transcends team loyalties. “You meet a ton of people from across the country and see familiar faces year after year.” The festival atmosphere is electric, with fans proudly donning jerseys, waving flags, and showcasing extravagant costumes.

This year is especially significant for Roughrider fans, who have not seen their team in a Grey Cup since 2013. “It’s stressful,” Stro admitted, reflecting the pressure of hoping for a triumphant return. “We were there in 2013 when they won it, and it would be great to see them do it again,” added Malone.

Meanwhile, Tara Watson and her friends embraced their roles as Grey Cup party referees, sporting traditional black and white stripes. “This is my 35th Grey Cup,” she said. “We’ve made it a girls weekend and met so many people over the years. It’s like a family.”

The Grey Cup festivities are in full swing, running through kickoff on Sunday evening at various locations in Winnipeg. Coverage for the 112th Grey Cup begins at noon Saskatchewan time on TSN and CTV, with the highly anticipated kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. Fans are gearing up for an unforgettable weekend filled with football, friendship, and festive spirit.

As celebrations continue, one thing is clear: the Grey Cup is more than a game; it’s a celebration of community, passion, and the spirit of Canadian football. Stay tuned for live updates as the weekend unfolds!
