Saskatchewan’s Deaf Community Hosts Urgent Holiday Craft Market
UPDATE: The Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services launched its highly anticipated holiday craft market at Market Mall this past Sunday, December 3, 2023. With an impressive array of baked goods, local honey, handcrafted gifts, ornaments, and jewelry, the event promises to be a significant opportunity for the deaf and hard of hearing community to showcase their talents and products.
This is the second year for the holiday craft market, which follows a successful stop in Regina last week. “It’s a good opportunity for deaf and hard of hearing people to come here, to be able to sell their stuff that they might not otherwise have a platform,” said Ren Perra, office coordinator for the Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.
The market not only highlights the creativity of the deaf community but also fosters a sense of inclusion. Perra noted that shoppers have even begun learning basic sign language while browsing the vibrant stalls.
“It’s so inspiring to see deaf and hard of hearing, and deaf-blind individuals, involved with marketing their wares,” expressed Patricia Spicer, a vocational worker at the organization. The event also welcomes allies—individuals who are not deaf or hard of hearing but support the community’s initiatives.
Adding to the excitement, two beautiful quilts made by deaf seniors are being raffled off. One quilt features intricate stitching of hand signs, symbolizing the rich cultural heritage of the deaf community. Tickets for the raffle are available for just $5 through the Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.
This market serves not only as a shopping venue but as a vital platform for empowerment and awareness. The urgency to support and engage with the deaf community is palpable, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in unique, handcrafted items with a meaningful story.
As the market continues today, shoppers are encouraged to participate and support local artisans. The inspiring atmosphere and community spirit make this an event not to be missed.
Stay tuned for further updates and highlights from this impactful holiday event!
