Saskatoon Blades’ Brayden Klimpke Shines in Season Opener
UPDATE: Saskatoon Blades defenceman Brayden Klimpke made headlines with a game-winning goal just over a week into the 2025-26 WHL season, propelling his team to a thrilling 3-2 victory against the Prince Albert Raiders on September 20, 2025. This pivotal moment solidifies Klimpke’s rising status as a key player for the Blades.
The Blades, currently holding a 2-2 record, face off against the Red Deer Rebels tonight at 7 p.m. at the SaskTel Centre, making this a crucial matchup as the team seeks to build momentum early in the season. Fans are eager to see if Klimpke can replicate his impressive performance in the upcoming games.
Klimpke, a native of Calgary, has quickly become a fan favorite, showcasing his skill and determination on the ice. After spending his childhood cheering for the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome, he now channels that passion into his own game, emerging as one of the Blades’ most reliable defensemen. Last season, he recorded three goals and 26 points in 59 games, ranking third in team scoring from the blueline.
In a thrilling overtime moment against the Raiders, Klimpke capitalized on a rebound from teammate Hayden Harsanyi, sealing the victory just 1:25 into the extra period. “I was a little gassed there, it was a long shift,” Klimpke admitted. “But I saw an opportunity to grab the puck and just tried to whack the rebound on net.”
Adding to his accomplishments, Klimpke has been named one of the Blades’ alternate captains for the season, a testament to the respect he commands within the locker room. Blades head coach Dan DaSilva expressed his surprise at the locker room’s choice, noting that Klimpke stands out as one of the youngest players in a leadership role among a group predominantly composed of players aged 19 and older.
“I was just honoured… it was a nice surprise,” Klimpke said regarding his leadership role. “It’s nice to know that my teammates see me as that, it allows me to be more vocal and help those guys out.”
Despite a mixed start to the season, Klimpke remains optimistic about the team’s direction. “The way the team has bought into Blades hockey this early has been noticeable for sure,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and commitment. “Obviously, the game versus Medicine Hat didn’t go our way, but I thought the last two periods we played pretty good.”
As the Blades prepare to take on the Rebels tonight, fans and teammates alike are eager to see how Klimpke and the team will build on their early success. With the excitement surrounding the Blades and Klimpke’s standout performance, this season promises to be one to watch.
Stay tuned for updates as the Blades look to secure another victory in their quest for WHL glory!
