UPDATE: A Saskatoon police officer has been charged with assault following a year-long investigation into an incident during an off-duty social gathering involving multiple officers. The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) announced the arrest after assessing evidence and interviewing witnesses connected to the September 14, 2024 incident.

Authorities report that the investigation began five days after the gathering, which involved over a dozen off-duty members of the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS). SIRT has stated that they have “reasonable grounds” to support the assault charge against the officer, who was apprehended on Thursday and subsequently released on an undertaking. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 27, 2024.

Police Chief Cam McBride confirmed that the officer’s name will be disclosed to the public during the upcoming court session, emphasizing the need for privacy at this stage. “We’re not releasing that information right now out of respect for the individual,” McBride stated.

In the wake of the incident, five officers were suspended with pay. Recent developments have seen three of those officers terminated from the service for being deemed “unsuitable for police service.” The dismissed officers included two constables with nine and ten years of experience and a special constable with two years of service. The remaining officers returned to their duties in April.

The SIRT conducts independent investigations into serious allegations involving police officers, including incidents of violence or sexual assault. This latest charge raises significant concerns about police conduct during off-duty hours and the implications for community trust in law enforcement.

As the case unfolds, residents and stakeholders will be watching closely for further updates. The SIRT’s findings will likely play a crucial role in addressing public confidence in the Saskatoon Police Service.
