URGENT UPDATE: Proposed amendments to the cemetery bylaw in Sault Ste. Marie are now under consideration, with significant changes that could impact how residents manage burials and interments. The City is evaluating new regulations that limit the number of cremated remains allowed in a single grave from six to four, as outlined in a recent announcement.

These changes are part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable and natural burial practices. If implemented, the new bylaw would also prohibit embalming in natural burials, allowing for only biodegradable burial containers. The focus would shift towards using wildflowers and grasses in cemetery landscaping, emphasizing a more environmentally friendly approach.

Current regulations permitting two full-body burials in one grave will remain unchanged for graves already owned by families. This move aims to balance traditional burial practices with the growing demand for more natural options.

Residents are encouraged to engage with these proposed changes at open houses scheduled for September 10. The first session will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre in the Russ Ramsay Room, followed by a second session from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the cemetery chapel located at 27 Fourth Line E. This is a critical opportunity for the community to voice opinions and gain insights into the future of cemetery services.

The City Council’s consideration of these amendments reflects a growing trend towards sustainable practices in the funeral industry, responding to resident interests in more eco-friendly burial options. As discussions unfold, the community is urged to stay informed and participate in shaping local policies that directly affect their loved ones’ final resting places.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the City of Sault Ste. Marie navigates these significant changes in cemetery regulations.
