UPDATE: A 39-year-old man has been charged with multiple offenses following a shocking series of break-and-enter incidents that spanned over six years in Sault Ste. Marie. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service confirmed the arrest after a lengthy investigation, revealing a pattern of criminal activity dating back to August 23, 2019.
The first reported break-in occurred at a business in the 100 block of Poplar Avenue, where the suspect caused damage and stole cash. The second incident took place on December 3, 2019, at a multi-unit residential building in the 100 block of Conmee Avenue, where he again inflicted damage and made off with cash and other valuables.
The latest incident happened on May 9, 2023, at a business located in the 200 block of Elizabeth Street. Police reported that the suspect not only vandalized the property and stole money but also left behind tools used in the break-in, which ultimately led to his identification.
Following months of investigation, authorities obtained an arrest warrant on July 22 and apprehended the suspect on August 8. He now faces a staggering three counts each of breaking-and-entering, mischief, theft, as well as possession of burglary tools. Additionally, he is charged with two counts of breach of recognizance.
The suspect has been released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on October 20, 2023. This case highlights the ongoing issue of property crime in the area and the need for community vigilance.
