Several Suspects Face Judge in Urgent Louvre Jewels Heist Case
UPDATE: Multiple suspects in the high-profile Louvre jewels heist were brought before an investigative judge today, September 30, 2023, just days after their arrest, according to urgent reports from French media outlets including BFM TV and Le Parisien. This breakthrough comes merely three days after police apprehended the suspects in connection with the daring theft that shocked the art world.
Among those presented today is a 38-year-old woman facing serious preliminary charges of complicity in theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy. Her lawyer, Adrien Sorrentino, confirmed that the judge ordered her to be remanded in custody, despite her vehement denial of any involvement in the crime.
At least one other suspect attended the courthouse for a similar hearing, with preliminary charges anticipated to follow. Reports indicate that five individuals were detained on Wednesday, including one linked to the crime by DNA evidence.
The Paris prosecutor’s office has yet to respond to inquiries from The Associated Press regarding the status of the investigation, heightening public interest in this unfolding case. Notably, two suspects, both men aged 34 and 39 from Aubervilliers, were charged earlier this week with theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy. According to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, both suspects provided “minimalist” statements and “partially admitted” their roles in the heist that took place in the iconic Apollo Gallery.
One of the suspects was apprehended at Charles-de-Gaulle Airport while attempting to flee with a one-way ticket to Algeria; his DNA was found on a scooter used during the getaway. As investigations progress, the identities of the arrested individuals remain undisclosed due to French privacy laws, which aim to protect victims and maintain the integrity of ongoing police work.
In a separate but equally alarming incident, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced today that six individuals were arrested shortly after a robbery at a gold refining laboratory in Lyon. The thieves used explosives during the heist, with stolen items valued at approximately 12 million euros ($13.9 million) now recovered.
As the investigation into the Louvre heist continues, authorities are under pressure to bring the culprits to justice. The public is eagerly awaiting further updates on this gripping case, which has captivated both art lovers and law enforcement alike.
