Sinnissippi Centers Launches Urgent Support Services for Veterans

UPDATE: Sinnissippi Centers in Dixon has just announced the launch of vital community services specifically for veterans, marking a significant step forward in mental health support. This initiative, which began in 2023, responds to the urgent needs of veterans facing isolation and the unique challenges stemming from their service.

“We know isolation is a major struggle for veterans,” said Bryn Slager, senior manager of community services. “Having someone who understands their experiences means everything.” Sinnissippi’s approach connects veterans with peers who can relate to their journeys, providing essential emotional support and assistance with daily life challenges.

The program was made possible through a federal grant from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Service Administration, enabling Sinnissippi to prepare for a full rollout in 2024 as a certified community behavioral health clinic. This nationwide model ensures comprehensive access to behavioral health care, specifically designed to meet the diverse needs of veterans.

As part of the service expansion, Sinnissippi has appointed a full-time veterans coordinator, who is also a veteran, to guide individuals through the complex landscape of benefits and resources available through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Currently, the coordinator is actively assisting approximately eight veterans regularly, with many others reaching out for support.

One of the standout features of Sinnissippi’s veteran services is the absence of restrictive entry requirements. “Unlike many facilities, we welcome any individual identifying as a veteran without complicated qualifications,” Slager emphasized. “If you identify as a veteran, we’re here to help.”

The personal stories of success highlight the program’s impact. Slager shared a poignant example of a veteran who struggled with trauma triggered by environmental factors, such as fog, reminiscent of past service experiences. The coordinator provided necessary emotional support and practical assistance, helping him navigate daily tasks like grocery shopping, which became daunting. Together, they created a safe space in his garage, allowing him to feel secure while still enjoying fresh air.

Sinnissippi’s veteran services are located at OSF Town Square Centre, 102 S. Hennepin Ave, and operate from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The facility features a welcoming drop-in center, informally called “the living room,” filled with games, crafts, and comfortable seating to encourage community engagement.
