Six Hospitalized After Passenger Van Crash on Route 31 in McHenry
A serious traffic accident involving a passenger van occurred on Route 31 in McHenry, Illinois, on the evening of July 29, 2023. At least six individuals were transported to local hospitals following the incident, which took place around 19:30 near Prime Parkway.
According to McHenry Deputy Chief of Police Thomas Walsh, the van was heading south on Route 31 when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle veered off the roadway and collided with a utility pole, resulting in significant damage and injuries to several occupants.
Emergency services quickly responded, and all six injured individuals were taken to Northwestern Medicine in McHenry, which is located just a few blocks away from the crash site. Reports indicate that one of the passengers sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening, according to Walsh.
Impact on Local Infrastructure
The collision caused extensive damage, including a blown transformer on the utility pole, which led to power outages in parts of McHenry. Local residents experienced disruptions as utility crews worked to restore electricity.
Eyewitness Rick Tomlinson, who arrived shortly after the crash, described the scene as chaotic. He noted that many bystanders were helping the injured and estimated that six to eight people were on the ground. Tomlinson observed that several individuals were wearing matching T-shirts, suggesting they were part of a group traveling together.
The passenger van, which was towing a trailer at the time of the accident, ended up facing north in the southbound lanes after the crash. This added complexity to the response efforts as authorities worked to clear the scene and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As of 20:30 on the same evening, law enforcement continued to manage the scene, gathering information and ensuring the safety of those in the vicinity. The investigation into the crash is ongoing as police seek further details regarding the events leading up to the collision.
