Sophie de Goede Nominated for World Rugby Player of the Year
BREAKING: Canadian rugby star Sophie de Goede has been nominated for the World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year, just 14 months after recovering from a devastating ACL injury. This nomination comes as Canada prepares for a historic showdown against England in the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup final, scheduled for September 27, 2025, at the sold-out Allianz Stadium in Twickenham.
This is de Goede’s second nomination for the prestigious award, a testament to her resilience and talent. She previously received this honor in 2022. Alongside de Goede, fellow finalists include New Zealand’s Jorja Miller and England’s Megan Jones.
World Rugby highlighted de Goede’s exceptional contributions to the tournament, stating, “Nominated for a second time in a Women’s Rugby World Cup year, de Goede may have moved into the second row since her return in July after a year out with an ACL injury, but her influence on matches is unchanged.”
De Goede has emerged as a key player throughout the tournament, ranking second in overall scoring with 58 points. She leads in crucial stats including 84 runs, 20 conversions, and 11 offloads. Her rare skill as a goal-kicking forward has proven invaluable, particularly during the semifinal against New Zealand, where she scored 14 points in a stunning 34-19 victory.
Rugby runs deep in de Goede’s blood; both her parents have captained Canadian national teams. Her father, Hans de Goede, led the men’s team, while her mother, Stephanie White, served as captain of the women’s side. Her brother, Thyssen, has also represented Canada internationally.
The upcoming final marks Canada’s second appearance in a championship match, following their previous runner-up finish to England in 2014. Canada has also secured fourth place on four occasions. The team’s entrance into the final reflects their status as the world’s second-ranked team, trailing only behind England.
World Rugby chair Brett Robinson praised the tournament, emphasizing its significance in showcasing the sport’s growth: “This remarkable Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 has demonstrated the very best of our game – the values, the unity, the incredible energy.” He highlighted the crucial bond players have forged with fans throughout the tournament.
Kickoff for the final is set for Saturday, September 27, at 8 a.m.. Following the match, the winner of the Women’s Player of the Year will be announced, adding to the excitement surrounding this pivotal moment for women’s rugby.
Stay tuned for updates on de Goede’s journey and the thrilling conclusion of the World Cup!
