URGENT UPDATE: A powerful ridge of high pressure is driving temperatures in southern Alberta to nearly 30°C today, with Lethbridge and Medicine Hat expected to hit this mark. Calgary will not be far behind, reaching highs around 26°C. However, residents should prepare for cloudy skies and strong winds impacting the region.

Starting in the late morning, sustained winds of 20 km/h will sweep through Calgary, with gusts potentially reaching up to 40 km/h. Officials warn that while today brings unseasonably warm weather, it will not be stable, as a low-pressure system is set to move in tomorrow.

Over the next 36 hours, rain currently affecting the southern British Columbia coast is expected to track north and east, bringing light rain to Calgary late today and into Tuesday. The heaviest precipitation is anticipated to fall north of Calgary, as the fast-moving system alters the warm weather pattern.

This warm spell is significant, as it marks a striking contrast to the normal September climate. According to meteorological sources, Calgary has only recorded one day in September with temperatures below seasonal averages, specifically on September 4. As the month progresses, daytime highs are expected to decrease from an average of 21°C at the start of September to just over 15°C by the end.

Looking ahead, the first days of October are still projected to remain above seasonal norms, although a slight cooldown is anticipated by the weekend.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on local weather alerts and prepare for changing conditions. The unusual heat and wind could have implications for outdoor activities and health, especially for vulnerable populations.

Stay tuned for more updates as this developing weather situation unfolds in southern Alberta.
