Sri Lanka Floods: Death Toll Soars to 123, 130 Missing Now
UPDATE: The devastating floods and mudslides in Sri Lanka, triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, have led to a tragic death toll of 123, with 130 people still missing as of October 15, 2023. This catastrophic weather event has displaced nearly 44,000 individuals, forcing them into temporary shelters, according to the country’s disaster management center.
The situation is evolving rapidly, with officials warning that the death toll may continue to rise. Social media reports indicate that several areas remain inaccessible due to mudslides that occurred overnight, complicating rescue efforts. The floodwaters have overwhelmed homes, fields, and critical infrastructure, particularly in the tea-growing central hill country, where the damage has been most severe.
Authorities have declared an emergency response, closing schools and offices, and postponing examinations. Major roadways have been rendered impassable, as rocks, mud, and fallen trees block routes. Train services have also been halted in many regions as a precautionary measure.
As of Friday, the rising water levels have started to affect neighborhoods around the capital, Colombo, which has experienced comparatively less rainfall but is now at risk due to downstream flooding. The government is closely monitoring the situation, as forecasts indicate that rain is expected to continue throughout Saturday.
Officials confirm that Cyclone Ditwah, which formed in the waters east of Sri Lanka, is projected to move toward India’s southern coast by Sunday. This development raises concerns about further impacts on Sri Lanka, as heavy rainfall could exacerbate the already dire conditions.
Local authorities and humanitarian organizations are mobilizing resources to assist those affected. The full extent of the disaster’s impact is still being assessed, and urgent aid is being dispatched to the hardest-hit regions.
Stay tuned for ongoing updates as rescue operations continue and the situation develops.
