St. Charles North Volleyball Wins 17th Straight Match, Dominates St. Francis

UPDATE: St. Charles North High School’s girls volleyball team has just secured their 17th consecutive match victory, defeating St. Francis in a nonconference showdown on October 4, 2023, with scores of 25-18 and 25-22. This remarkable win not only extends their match-winning streak but also marks 34 consecutive sets won, underscoring their dominance on the court.
The North Stars (22-2) jumped out to a commanding start, taking an early lead of 18-5 in the first set, thanks to a powerful seven-point rally. However, St. Francis (15-4) responded with a rally of their own, narrowing the gap to 20-16 before the North Stars regained control. Key contributions from standout players like outside hitter Ellie Sutter and captain Haley Burgdorf, who both delivered crucial service aces, proved pivotal in sealing the win.
Coach Lindsey Hawkins emphasized the team’s focus on incremental victories: “Every day, we’re just trying to win the day. We want to come in, and we want to be the best that we can be that day in that moment,” she stated. This mantra is clearly resonating with the team, as they continue to perform at an elite level.
The second set was closely contested, with St. Charles North narrowly securing the win after a series of intense exchanges. At one point, a humorous incident involving St. Francis senior Maria Bukowski, whose shoe came off mid-point, lightened the mood and provided a brief reset for her team. St. Francis coach Lisa Ston noted, “She is just a lighthearted kid… it kind of did break the tension in the moment.”
Despite a spirited effort, St. Francis was unable to overcome the North Stars’ early momentum. Junior Grace Glover led the Spartans with six kills, showcasing her skill despite the loss. Coach Ston reflected on the challenge of facing such a formidable opponent, stating, “Unfortunately, we got ourselves into a little bit of a slump to start… which is tough to dig out against a team like that.”
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on St. Charles North as they seek to extend their winning streak even further. The North Stars’ next match will be crucial as they aim to maintain their momentum and assert their dominance in the upcoming games. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if they can continue this exceptional run and push toward a championship.
