Stolarz Stars as Leafs Edge Rangers 2-1 in Overtime Thriller

UPDATE: In an electrifying showdown, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New York Rangers 2-1 in overtime on October 16, 2025, with goaltender Anthony Stolarz delivering an outstanding performance. Stolarz made 28 saves, including a jaw-dropping stop against Rangers captain J.T. Miller while playing without his mask, showcasing his determination and skill.
The dramatic moment unfolded in the third period when Stolarz’s helmet was knocked off after taking a shot from Matt Rempe. Despite the precarious situation, he managed to deny Miller’s point-blank opportunity, an impressive feat that left fans and teammates in awe. “It’s not an ideal situation, but at that stage of the game, you’re just trying to do anything to keep the puck out of the net,” Stolarz remarked.
With the game on the line, Auston Matthews clinched the victory for the Leafs just 58 seconds into overtime, scoring off an assist from William Nylander. This win not only boosts Toronto’s morale but also highlights Stolarz’s crucial role as the team’s starting goaltender, especially with Joseph Woll absent due to personal matters.
Stolarz, who signed a four-year, US$15 million contract extension last month, emphasized the need for the NHL to reevaluate safety protocols regarding goaltender equipment. “Hopefully we can find a compromise,” he stated, addressing concerns about player safety when masks come off during play.
“He’s in a very vulnerable position and a position to get really hurt,” said Leafs head coach Craig Berube. “I don’t think anybody wants to see that — ever.”
Players on both sides expressed surprise at the ruling that allowed play to continue despite Stolarz’s helmet being off. “I was a little scared, to be honest,” said Matthew Knies, who also contributed by scoring Toronto’s first power-play goal of the season. “That was a shocker, for sure, for everyone.”
As the game progressed, Toronto fans erupted in cheers midway through the third period as word spread that the Toronto Blue Jays had taken the lead in their playoff game, further energizing the atmosphere at Scotiabank Arena.
This victory puts the Leafs in a strong position early in the season as they aim for the playoffs, with Stolarz proving to be a formidable asset. As the team continues to build momentum, fans will be eagerly watching the next game to see if Stolarz can maintain his stellar form and if the organization addresses the safety concerns raised during this thrilling matchup.
Stay tuned for more updates as the NHL season unfolds and the Leafs seek to capitalize on this hard-fought win.
