UPDATE: The Go-Give Project urgently calls for donations as its warming centre at Energy Court in Greater Sudbury faces soaring demand, serving 100-150 visitors daily. The centre, operational 24/7, provides crucial support, including snacks, hot beverages, and access to outreach workers. With winter approaching, officials warn that the need for supplies is becoming critical.

Just one month after centralizing social services at Energy Court, the facility is at capacity every night, according to Ali Farooq, interim executive director of Go-Give. “If somebody leaves, it opens a spot for someone else,” Farooq stated, emphasizing that the centre’s resources are vital for those in need. “We offer hand-warmers at the door, ensuring nobody has to wait outside in the cold.”

The City of Greater Sudbury has also centralized social service supports at the site, allowing individuals to connect with client navigators for essential needs like housing and food programs. Sue Ritchie Raymond, the city’s manager of housing stability and homelessness, confirmed they are closely monitoring the situation to adapt services as necessary.

However, the rising demand has highlighted a significant challenge: an urgent need for more supplies. Go-Give is now seeking donations of items such as coffee, bread, pre-packaged snacks, hand-warmers, and emergency blankets. “Every item counts as we strive to keep everyone warm and supported during these harsh winter months,” Farooq added.

A crucial meeting between the city and Go-Give is scheduled for later this week to discuss strategies for enhancing support for individuals living in nearby encampments. The community is encouraged to contribute to the warming hub’s efforts. “Our main hope is for a milder winter,” Farooq remarked, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

With the cold weather settling in, the need for active support has never been more pressing. As the Go-Give Project continues to serve Greater Sudbury, community involvement is key to ensuring no one is left out in the elements.

For those interested in helping, donations can be dropped off at Energy Court. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the community rallies to meet the growing needs of its most vulnerable members.
