Sudbury’s New Outdoor Theatre, Refettorio, Opens August 8

UPDATE: A new outdoor theatre, the Refettorio, is set to transform downtown Sudbury when it opens on August 8. Funded by $750,000 from the province, the venue is currently under construction at a previously vacant lot across from the YMCA on Durham Street.

This ambitious project, spearheaded by YES Theatre, aims to revitalize the downtown arts scene and create a vibrant cultural hub. The outdoor theatre will feature a seating capacity of 125, universal washrooms, a Juliet balcony, and a concession stand, enhancing the downtown experience for both locals and visitors.

Scott Denniston, general manager of YES Theatre, stated, “The idea to have an outdoor amphitheatre-style in a downtown setting… is really about creating a vibrant art scene in our downtown.” The project originated during the pandemic to provide work for artists but evolved into a massive $3 million initiative aimed at long-term community engagement.

Refettorio, derived from the Latin word meaning “to repair and restore,” is intended to be more than just a performance space. Denniston explained the inspiration drawn from Italian chef Massimo Bottura, who revitalizes communities through food. “This space will have a food component… it’s kind of like a ‘dining room for the soul,’” he said, emphasizing the cultural impact of the venue.

In addition to hosting productions like Romeo and Juliet and a Shania Twain tribute titled Forever and Always, the venue aims to draw patrons to downtown Sudbury’s local restaurants and shops. “The idea is with that art, hopefully, it will be an enticing thing for Sudburians to come downtown and enjoy the art that’s happening in the space,” Denniston noted.

Ruthie Nkut, associate artistic director, highlighted the unique opportunities the space presents for performers. “It’s a fresh stage, it’s a different way of working. It feels like we can create anything. It feels like an ‘imaginitorium,’” she remarked, emphasizing the creative freedom the outdoor setting will provide.
