Surrey Council Approves $7.57 Million Bear Creek Bridge Replacement
The City of Surrey has moved forward with plans to replace the aging Bear Creek Bridge, which has served the community for over 50 years. On July 14, 2023, the Surrey City Council approved a contract valued at more than $7.57 million for the project, with a total budget limit of $8.33 million. The contract has been awarded to B.A. Blacktop Infrastructure Inc., and construction is expected to commence this summer, with completion anticipated by the Fall of 2026.
The upcoming project involves not only the replacement of the bridge but also significant road improvements on 140 Street. The section between 80B Avenue and the 8200-block will be expanded from two lanes to four lanes, incorporating dedicated cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. This enhancement aims to improve traffic flow and safety for all users of the road.
Scott Neuman, Surrey’s General Manager of Engineering, explained that while the bridge’s width will remain largely unchanged, it will now accommodate four lanes of travel, including space for cyclists. He noted that the bridge was originally designed to be slightly larger than standard, allowing for this upgrade. Additionally, the bridge will be raised to prevent flooding during heavy rainfall events, which have increasingly threatened the structure’s integrity. Neuman highlighted that the elevation change will also facilitate wildlife passage during drier periods.
This infrastructure initiative reflects Surrey’s ongoing commitment to enhancing transportation safety and efficiency while addressing environmental concerns. By modernizing the Bear Creek Bridge and the surrounding roadway, the city aims to better serve its growing population and encourage sustainable transportation options.
The project is part of a broader strategy to improve infrastructure across the region, ensuring that essential services keep pace with the demands of a rapidly developing urban environment. As construction progresses, local residents can expect various updates regarding traffic management and accessibility around the work zones.
