Suspect Identified in Maple Ridge Tragedy; Community in Shock

UPDATE: A suspect has been identified in the tragic incident that unfolded in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, on July 23, 2023, where two retirees were killed in a violent confrontation. Neighbours are reeling from the shocking news, as authorities confirm that Trevor Hillman, a local family man, is the main suspect in this devastating case.
Around 6:40 p.m. on that fateful evening, police responded to a report of a dispute involving Hillman and his neighbours, Bruce Richards and Roxanne Davidson. Officers left the scene after speaking with several individuals, but just hours later, they returned to a scene of chaos. At approximately 11 p.m., reports of a vehicle fire, break and enter, and shots fired led to the discovery of the two victims inside their home, alongside a dog.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed that both Richards and Davidson were found deceased from gunshot wounds, while Hillman was later found in his home around 2:10 a.m. with a self-inflicted injury. Neighbours identified Hillman as the suspect, with many expressing disbelief at the violent turn of events.
“I didn’t see it coming,” said Dianne Hammer, a local resident who knew Hillman well. “He was a kind man, and whatever happened to him was something out of control.” Hammer described Hillman as someone who was always generous with her grandchildren, sharing toys and helping with their dirt bikes.
The community now stands in mourning, with a memorial established outside Richards and Davidson’s home, where bouquets of flowers have been placed. Hammer emphasized the tragic impact of the dispute, stating, “It’s sad that people’s lives were taken over whatever the dispute was.”
Authorities report that the conflict between Hillman and the couple involved long-standing issues over parking and a dog. Despite the tensions, many neighbours expressed shock at the escalation to violence. “You can’t really judge right, because we don’t know what people are going through,” said neighbour Tricia Darton. “We don’t know what someone could be struggling with.”
As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the aftermath of this heartbreaking event. The home of Richards and Davidson has been boarded up, and questions remain unanswered about the motivations behind the violence.
Hillman was affiliated with the International Union of Operating Engineers, a significant organization representing thousands of workers in the region. The union has yet to comment publicly on the incident.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the potential for conflict within close-knit communities, prompting discussions about mental health and support for those in distress. As Maple Ridge begins to heal, residents are urged to reflect on the importance of compassion and understanding in the face of adversity.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident, and community members are encouraged to come forward with any additional information.
