Swearing Boosts Strength, Study Finds Hidden Psychological Benefits
Research from the American Psychological Association reveals that swearing during physical challenges can enhance performance by helping individuals tap into hidden strengths. A study conducted at Keele University in the UK found that participants who used expletives while facing strenuous tasks were able to push themselves harder and endure longer.
The findings suggest that swearing reduces psychological barriers, increases confidence, and enables individuals to achieve a focused state often referred to as “flow.” According to Richard Stephens, the lead researcher, swearing allows people to break free from self-imposed limitations. He noted, “In many situations, people hold themselves back — consciously or unconsciously — from using their full strength. Swearing is an easily available way to help yourself feel focused, confident, and less distracted, and ‘go for it’ a little more.”
Exploring the Psychological Mechanism
Previous studies indicated that swearing correlates with improved performance in demanding situations. The current research aimed to delve deeper into how this phenomenon occurs. The hypothesis posited that swearing could shift individuals into a disinhibited mental state, enabling them to feel less restrained by social norms and internal hesitations. This shift could allow for greater effort in challenging scenarios.
To test this theory, the research team conducted two experiments involving a total of 192 participants. Each participant completed a chair push-up task while repeating either a self-chosen swear word or a neutral word every two seconds. After these tasks, participants provided feedback regarding their emotional experience during the exercises.
The surveys measured various mental factors associated with disinhibition, including levels of positive emotion, amusement, distraction, and confidence. Additionally, researchers assessed psychological “flow,” which describes a profound focus and immersion in an activity.
Performance Improvements Linked to Swearing
The results echoed and reinforced earlier findings. Participants who swore during the chair push-up task were able to sustain their body weight for significantly longer periods than those repeating a neutral word. By combining data from both experiments with prior research, the team identified that the performance boost correlated with higher levels of psychological flow, reduced distraction, and increased self-confidence, all essential components of a disinhibited state.
Stephens remarked, “Swearing is literally a calorie neutral, drug-free, low-cost, readily available tool at our disposal for when we need a boost in performance.” He emphasized that swearing could be a practical strategy for anyone looking to enhance their physical capabilities, particularly in high-pressure situations.
The research team intends to further investigate whether the benefits of swearing extend beyond physical challenges. The study has been published in the journal American Psychologist, under the title “Don’t hold back: Swearing improves strength through state disinhibition.”
This research highlights an intriguing intersection of psychology and performance, suggesting that a simple act of swearing may unlock greater potential in various aspects of life.
