UPDATE: Swift Current Broncos defenceman Josh McGregor is making headlines as he thrives in his second season of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The 18-year-old Brandon native is showcasing newfound confidence, with 2 goals and 7 assists already this season, just 9 games in.

McGregor, who previously struggled as a rookie, claims that experience has transformed his game. “Everything just feels easier,” he stated. “You feel more comfortable with players and coaching staff, and being able to make more plays.” His momentum is crucial for the Broncos, who sit at 6-3-0-0 and in fifth place in the Eastern Conference after a rocky start.

Under the guidance of head coach Dean DeSilva, McGregor has earned more trust and responsibility on the ice, getting significant power-play time and contributing to the penalty kill. “Josh is a phenomenal young man, on and off the ice,” DeSilva praised. “There’s a huge ceiling for him.”

The Swift Current Broncos, who have transitioned to a younger roster this season, lost several key players but are relying on emerging talents like McGregor. His performance is especially notable since he previously played with an elite under-18 AAA Wheat Kings team that reached the Telus Cup final last season.

In a triumphant return to his hometown rink on October 16, McGregor helped lead the Broncos to a thrilling 5-4 victory against the Brandon Wheat Kings. He assisted on the opening goal and scored a critical goal that showcased his growing skill set. “It’s awesome… just playing in that rink, you watch all their games when you’re a kid and you want to play in the league,” McGregor reflected.

McGregor’s journey to the WHL was not without challenges. After an impressive season with the under-15 AAA Wheat Kings, he went undrafted in the 2022 WHL draft. He spent the following season at the Rink Hockey Academy before joining the Broncos, where he initially aimed for a college hockey path. His decision to join the WHL has proven fruitful, as he has now been named to Central Scouting’s preliminary players to watch list with a projected sixth- or seventh-round NHL draft candidacy.

The urgency for McGregor to perform well is palpable, especially as he aims for a potential NHL future. “I want to keep playing well and maybe even get drafted to the NHL, hopefully,” he said.

As the WHL season continues, all eyes will be on Josh McGregor and the Swift Current Broncos. Fans can expect more excitement as the team strives for playoff success, fueled by McGregor’s impressive development and rising star power.

Stay tuned for more updates on McGregor and the WHL as the season unfolds!
