Taber’s Fundraising Street Hockey Tournament Features NHL Stars!
UPDATE: The Town of Taber, Alberta, is gearing up for an exciting street hockey tournament featuring former NHL stars and Olympic champions later this month. The Play On Street Hockey Tournament will take place on March 27-28, 2023, with celebrity guests including Brian Skrudland, Kelly Buchberger, Rich Sutter, and three-time Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Johnston.
This event is not just about hockey; it’s a crucial fundraiser aimed at rebuilding Taber’s community center arena, which suffered extensive damage from a devastating Zamboni explosion in mid-December. An investigation revealed that a component failure in the Zamboni’s fuel system resulted in a gas cloud filling the ice surfacer room, leading to a fire when it ignited upon contact with an electric heater.
The stakes are high for Taber, which will learn this Saturday whether it has been chosen as a provincial winner of the Kraft Hockeyville Competition. The competition offers $50,000 to one community in each province and territory of Canada, with the runner-up receiving $100,000 and the grand prize totaling $250,000. The winner will be announced on April 4, 2023.
The street hockey tournament is expected to draw significant attention and support, as it provides an opportunity for local residents and fans to come together for a good cause. “We’re thrilled to have such incredible athletes join us in this effort to rebuild our arena,” said a town representative. “It means a lot to our community, especially after the challenges we’ve faced.”
With the tournament approaching, excitement is building. Fans are encouraged to participate, cheer for their teams, and support the fundraising efforts that are vital for restoring the beloved community center.
