Terry Fox Run Raises Over $35,000 for Cancer Research Today

BREAKING: The Terry Fox Run in Prince Albert has raised an impressive $35,180.15 for cancer research, marking a significant increase over last year’s total of $33,720.80. This year’s event, held on September 24, 2023, at the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse, drew 114 runners and walkers, who participated in various routes of 2K, 5K, or 10K.
The atmosphere was electric as cancer survivor and Honourary Chair Liane Vance and fellow participant Emma Huet led the opening ceremonies, carrying the Terry Fox Run flag to Ninth Avenue. “The community is certainly coming together to help me do this,” said Shelley Mitchell, co-chair and mother of cancer survivor Chelsea Mitchell. The palpable excitement was fueled by favorable weather, which held off rain until later in the day.
Before the run, Mitchell expressed confidence in this year’s turnout, stating, “Money is still coming in and it’s beautiful.” In an inspiring twist, longtime committee member Vern Hodgins, who expected to miss his first Terry Fox Run, made a surprise appearance, further energizing participants.
The event began with registrations at 12 PM, with eager participants lining up before the scheduled time, showcasing the community’s commitment to the cause. “It looks like a beautiful day and we’re actually ahead of where we were last year,” Mitchell added, highlighting the momentum building before the run concluded.
In a heartfelt moment, Vance shared her personal journey as a cancer survivor, emphasizing the importance of events like this in raising awareness and funds for ongoing research. “It’s amazing to have Liane. Bruce will never be forgotten for all that he’s done for this community,” Mitchell noted, referring to the legacy of Terry Fox.
The Terry Fox Run has evolved since its inception, having previously taken place at Little Red River Park and City Hall. Fundraising efforts will continue through an online auction, running until September 25, featuring generous donations from local organizations.
As of now, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $850 million for cancer research, reinforcing the vital role community events play in this ongoing battle. “Thank you to all our sponsors and volunteers that showed up this year to make this possible,” Mitchell expressed, acknowledging the collective effort behind the event’s success.
For those interested in contributing to the cause, the online auction is now live, offering a chance to win exciting prizes while supporting cancer research initiatives. Stay tuned for further updates on this impactful community event.
