Thousands Unite in Waterloo for Terry Fox Run, Raising $162K

URGENT UPDATE: Thousands across Canada united today, October 15, 2023, to honor the legacy of Terry Fox, raising an astonishing $162,000 for cancer research in events from coast to coast. The annual Terry Fox Run was a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have in the fight against cancer, continuing a journey that began 45 years ago.
At 10 a.m. local time, the City of Waterloo kicked off its Terry Fox Run, where donations soared to $73,400 by noon, easily surpassing the local goal of $53,800. This significant fundraising effort reflects the ongoing commitment of Canadians to support cancer research in memory of Fox, who began his heroic Marathon of Hope in 1980 after losing his right leg to bone cancer.
Surrounding communities also joined the cause, with the Guelph run raising at least $42,690, while participants in Cambridge contributed $30,119 and Brantford raised an impressive $16,859. All three locations exceeded their fundraising targets, showcasing the solidarity and determination of participants.
In Cambridge’s Riverside Park, approximately 150 participants ran, walked, or biked the designated route. Among them was Michelle Barnard, a longtime participant who shared her personal connection to the cause. “I’ve been doing the Terry Fox Run for over 20 years. I lost my dad when I was 21,” she stated, highlighting the emotional weight of the event.
Survivors also took part, including Yvonne Clifford, who wore a red shirt to signify her battle with cancer. “I was diagnosed with a very rare form of breast cancer, where the survival rate is quite low, and I’m on my sixth year of [remission], so [I’m] very excited,” she expressed. Clifford emphasized the importance of community in these runs, stating, “The whole country involved in Terry Fox Runs are there for us to raise money but also know that we’re not alone.”
These events are more than just fundraising; they are a powerful testament to community spirit and support for those affected by cancer. The legacy of Terry Fox continues to inspire new generations, proving that together, we can make a difference.
For those who couldn’t attend the runs, donations are still being accepted at terryfox.org. Join the fight against cancer and help continue the mission that Terry Fox started over four decades ago.
