Timmins, Ont. Faces Ongoing Cleanup After Massive Snowstorm
UPDATE: The city of Timmins, Ontario is grappling with severe snow accumulation following a massive storm that struck on Boxing Day. City officials confirm that snow removal efforts are in full swing, but substantial cleanup will take time.
Mayor Michelle Boileau stated, “We are focusing on high-traffic areas, but it will all get done eventually.” Public works crews have been tirelessly working for the past four days, clearing roads and ensuring emergency services can operate effectively.
In a remarkable effort, these crews have assisted 18 ambulances since the storm began. “Our teams cleared road access for priority calls ahead of ambulances,” Mayor Boileau explained. This coordinated response has been vital as many highways in the region were forced to close due to dangerous conditions.
Despite some flight cancellations from Victor M. Power Airport due to visibility issues, it remains a crucial entry point for the city. Mayor Boileau praised the airport crews for keeping the main runway open, although parking has become a significant challenge. The city has advised travelers to use drop-off services when possible to alleviate congestion.
Residents have faced difficulties navigating the snow-covered streets, and while many motorists got stuck, local police have reported no serious incidents. “Call volume has been slightly lower over the past three days,” said Staff Sgt. Camile Camirand of the Timmins Police Service. He noted that the community is responding to the severity of the situation responsibly.
The city has issued an extreme cold weather alert for the third consecutive day, urging residents to take precautions. Those in need of emergency shelter can go to the Living Space on Spruce Street South.
As Timmins continues its recovery efforts, officials emphasize the importance of communication. Residents are reminded that 911 is for emergencies only, not for non-urgent transportation requests.
Stay tuned for updates as the city works around the clock to restore normalcy amid this ongoing winter crisis.
