Tom Cruise Reveals ‘Brutal’ Injury in Mission: Impossible Stunt
URGENT UPDATE: Tom Cruise has revealed that he “almost broke [his] back” while performing a dangerous stunt in the upcoming film Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The 63-year-old actor, reprising his role as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, faced life-threatening moments during a thrilling biplane sequence.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cruise recounted the harrowing moment when he jumped from one plane to another, battling the villain Gabriel, played by Esai Morales. “Oh, this almost broke my back!” he exclaimed while watching the footage. The stakes were high as the director Christopher McQuarrie confirmed, “You’re talking about a lot of pain here.”
The perilous scene not only pushed Cruise to the limit but also caused significant injury to his hands. As he clung onto Gabriel’s biplane, his fingers were reportedly separated from the force, resulting in severe swelling. McQuarrie noted, “By the time we finished this sequence, your hands were absolutely swollen – oh my God, it was so painful to watch.”
Cruise described filming the stunt as “brutal,” emphasizing the physical toll it took on him. The tension escalated further when Gabriel flipped the plane, sending Ethan crashing against the side, prompting Cruise to wince, “Oh, that was brutal. That hit, that was a hard one.” McQuarrie humorously acknowledged Cruise’s improvisation during the stunt, highlighting the actor’s commitment to authenticity.
Set for release in 2025, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning follows Ethan Hunt as he confronts a powerful AI known as The Entity, which threatens to unravel the IMF and the world. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Pom Klementieff.
Reflecting on his decades-long journey with the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise expressed gratitude on social media, stating, “Over 30 years ago, I began the journey of producing my first film, Mission: Impossible. Since then, these eight films have taken me on the adventure of a lifetime.” He thanked the talented teams that contributed to the series and concluded with heartfelt appreciation for fans: “Most importantly, I want to thank the audience, for whom it is our great pleasure to create these films.”
As the film approaches its release, fans and industry insiders alike are eager to see how Cruise’s grueling efforts translate to the screen. Stay tuned for more updates on this thrilling finale to the beloved action franchise.
