UPDATE: The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies (CFKR) has just announced that Tony Bourke is the recipient of the 2025 Knights of Pythias Community Volunteer Award, coinciding with Giving Tuesday celebrations. This award recognizes Bourke’s tireless efforts in volunteering, making a significant impact in Cranbrook and its surroundings.

According to Lynnette Wray, CFKR Executive Director, this award highlights the spirit of generosity that Giving Tuesday embodies. Wray stated, “Today is a special day to encourage and recognize charitable giving worldwide. Tony is an inspiring community volunteer who exemplifies the meaning of this award.”

Bourke’s commitment to community service began in 2011 with the Cranbrook Food Bank, where he dedicates four days a week to managing “Tony’s Bread Shed.” He plays a crucial role in weighing and recording incoming food donations and is known as an indispensable team member. His volunteer journey also includes significant contributions to the Cranbrook Hospital Auxiliary and the Key City Theatre.

In a generous move, Bourke has designated the accompanying $750 donation from the award to KidSport Cranbrook, a charity that helps local children participate in sports. Julie Rose, Executive Director of the Cranbrook Food Bank Society and Bourke’s nominator, praised him, saying, “Tony is more than a volunteer; he’s part of the fabric of our community.” She emphasized his inspiring grit and lifelong commitment to serving others.

The CFKR is proud to manage the Knights of Pythias endowment fund, which annually recognizes a community volunteer. Previous award winners include Laura Kennedy (2024), who was honored for her dedication to community service, and Mike LeClair (2023), who established a local chapter of Therapeutic Paws of Canada.

Bourke’s recognition today not only celebrates his individual contributions but also serves as a reminder of the profound impact that dedicated volunteers have on their communities. As Cranbrook continues to thrive, the legacy of volunteers like Bourke inspires others to engage and contribute.

Stay tuned for more updates on community initiatives and volunteer recognition as they unfold. This award highlights the importance of community involvement, especially on a day dedicated to giving back.
