Topsail-Paradise Recount Begins Tomorrow, Stakes High for PCs

UPDATE: The recount for Topsail-Paradise is set to commence tomorrow morning, marking a pivotal moment in the aftermath of the October 14, 2025 general election. A Supreme Court justice granted the Liberal Party a recount after their narrow loss to Progressive Conservative incumbent Paul Dinn, who won by just 102 votes.

The recount was authorized after allegations surfaced that some ballots had been improperly marked, with candidates’ names circled instead of marked with an X. Political scientist Kelly Blidook emphasized that while the probability of the seat flipping to the Liberals is “very low,” the recount is essential to ensure electoral integrity.

Justice Alphonsus Faour ruled on Friday that despite the low odds, the situation warranted a closer look. The judge’s decision allows both the PCs and the Liberals to appoint lawyers to scrutinize the ballots, determining which should be contested during the hand count. This meticulous process ensures that every valid vote is accounted for, further solidifying the democratic process.

Blidook reassured that the recount process “does not threaten democracy” and is, in fact, a testament to it. He stated, “This is a good thing that we’re making sure we get this right.” The stakes are high: if Dan Bobbett, the Liberal candidate and former mayor of Paradise, emerges victorious, it could significantly impact the Progressive Conservative’s majority government status.

Bobbett, while remaining measured about his chances, defended the recount as a responsible action. “The goal is not to undermine the system at all. It’s … not only appropriate, but it’s responsible,” he stated. He added that regardless of the outcome, he will continue his professional role as a biomedical engineering technologist with Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services.

As the recount approaches, tension is palpable in Topsail-Paradise. The political landscape could shift dramatically based on the results, and all eyes will be on the ballots as they are reviewed.
