UPDATE: Toronto’s holiday season ignited with the launch of the annual Cavalcade of Lights festival on December 2, 2023. The vibrant event, featuring the city’s official Christmas tree lighting and the first night of outdoor skating at Nathan Phillips Square, drew a festive crowd eager to celebrate the season.

As the countdown echoed through the square, the towering Christmas tree illuminated, captivating attendees bundled against the chilly 0°C temperatures. “I’ve never been to the tree lighting before,” said visitor Justine Brown from Stoney Creek. “It’s really fun,” she added, reflecting the excitement of the crowd.

The evening was alive with performances, including a memorable set by Indigenous artist DJ Classic Roots, accompanied by Cree dancer Anthony Gladue. Their dynamic presentation attracted a shoulder-to-shoulder audience, as colorful performers weaved through the square, adding to the festive ambiance.

Festival-goer Kim Mangos, visiting from Barrie, expressed her admiration for the event, remarking, “I wish my city did this.” She noted the stark contrast with her hometown’s more subdued holiday events.

Thousands of dazzling, energy-efficient LED lights will illuminate Nathan Phillips Square nightly, creating a magical atmosphere that will last until January 7, 2024. “I think this is a great thing for the community,” Mangos commented, highlighting the festival’s positive impact.

A significant announcement came from Mayor Olivia Chow, who announced the city’s initiative for affordable winter activities. “This morning I opened up most of the skating rinks across the city,” she declared, emphasizing that by next Saturday, all 50 skating rinks will be free for public enjoyment.

The rinks will offer a variety of family-friendly activities, including public leisure and figure skating, shinny, and instructional programs. Mayor Chow also introduced the reintroduction of the Skate Lending Library, in partnership with Desjardins Financial Group, aimed at providing skates and helmets to newcomers and families, ensuring everyone can enjoy skating without the expense of purchasing equipment.

The mobile Skate Lending Library will travel to outdoor rinks throughout Toronto, making skating even more accessible. “The city wants to make its activities as affordable as possible,” Chow stated, underscoring the city’s commitment to community engagement.

Highlighting the night was a spectacular figure skating performance featuring Madeline Schizas, who represented Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics, alongside 2025 Four Continents bronze medallists Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud. Their performance marked the grand opening of the city’s skating rinks, enchanting the audience with their talents.

As Toronto embraces the festive spirit, the Cavalcade of Lights festival stands out not only for its dazzling displays but also for its commitment to community and inclusivity. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to partake in the holiday celebrations, making lasting memories throughout this joyous season.

Stay tuned for more updates as Toronto’s Cavalcade of Lights festival continues to unfold, bringing joy and excitement to all.
