Toronto Police to Reveal New Details in 8-Year-Old’s Tragic Shooting
UPDATE: The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is set to reveal critical new information in the investigation into the heartbreaking shooting death of 8-year-old Jahvai Roy. A press conference is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. today at Toronto Police Headquarters, promising updates in a case that has captured the city’s attention and sparked outrage.
Jahvai was tragically killed by a stray bullet while asleep in his North York apartment on August 16, 2023. Gunfire erupted outside their home near Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive, with a bullet piercing the window of their first-floor unit, striking him as he lay beside his mother, Holly Roy. Despite immediate medical attention, Jahvai was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.
In an emotional Facebook post, Holly Roy recounted the harrowing moments just before the shooting. “We were in bed. He was laying beside me, and then we heard the shots. Two shots… My baby sat up. The last look he gave me was fear,” she shared, emphasizing the profound tragedy of losing her son in such a violent manner.
The aftermath of Jahvai’s death has ignited widespread grief and calls for action throughout Toronto. A vigil held outside their home drew hundreds of mourners, including Mayor Olivia Chow, who has advocated for stricter measures to combat gun violence and the influx of illegal firearms into the community.
In the investigation’s wake, TPS has released images of a white Acura believed to be linked to the shooting. Authorities are urging the public to assist in identifying and locating the vehicle, which fled the scene moments before officers arrived.
Support for the Roy family has poured in, with a GoFundMe campaign raising over $89,000 to assist with funeral costs, trauma counseling, and relocation efforts. This tragedy not only highlights the urgent issue of gun violence but also the profound impact it has on families and communities.
Stay tuned for updates following the press conference, as the TPS aims to shed light on this devastating incident and its ongoing investigation. The community remains on high alert, hoping for justice and safety in the wake of this heartbreaking loss.
