Toronto Principal Stays Amid Student Protests; Community Celebrates

UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, long-time principal Barrie Sketchley will remain at Rosedale Heights School of the Arts (RHSA) after widespread protests from students and parents. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) confirmed this decision in an urgent announcement on August 5, 2025, stating that he will continue leading the school until his retirement in June 2026.
The TDSB’s Superintendent of Education, Jennifer Chan, shared in a letter to the school community that the Ministry of Education’s appointed supervisor has decided to reverse the planned transfer. “Principal Sketchley’s deep connection to students, families, and staff has shaped the identity of the school,” Chan emphasized, ensuring a stable leadership for the upcoming academic year.
Hundreds of students rallied fiercely against Sketchley’s transfer when it was initially announced in early June. The outpouring of support highlighted the principal’s cherished legacy at RHSA, where he has served for over 33 years. Sketchley has transformed RHSA from a vocational school into a vibrant hub for the arts, deeply impacting the lives of countless students.
In a previous June 9 announcement, the TDSB had revealed plans for Sketchley to transition to Harbord Collegiate, with Joseph Ghassibe set to take over his role. However, following community outcry, the decision to keep Sketchley was made, reflecting the voices and concerns of the students and parents.
The RHSA School Advisory Council expressed its “heartfelt appreciation” for the recent news, highlighting the importance of continuity in leadership. “This is truly a win-win for our entire school community,” the council stated. They recognized Sketchley’s remarkable dedication to fostering creativity, inclusivity, and student growth at RHSA.
Sketchley, now in his 80s, has dedicated over four decades to education, with a significant portion of his career spent at RHSA. His commitment to student welfare and his passion for the arts has left an indelible mark on the school’s culture.
Chan also stated that Ghassibe will now join RHSA’s administrative team as “Centrally Assigned Principal – Transitions,” tasked with supporting both Sketchley and the Vice-Principals, Natalie Bacchus and Amy Scholl, in various initiatives.
As the school year approaches, the RHSA community is poised for a year of learning, inspiration, and celebration under Sketchley’s experienced leadership. The decision serves as a testament to the power of community advocacy, ensuring that student voices remain at the heart of educational decisions.
TDSB officials have confirmed the accuracy of these developments but have refrained from additional comments, directing inquiries to the Ministry of Education for further information.
This urgent update not only underscores the value of community engagement but also sets the stage for a pivotal year at Rosedale Heights. The support for Principal Sketchley has proven that when voices unite, significant change can happen.
Stay tuned as more details develop regarding the upcoming school year and initiatives at RHSA.
