Toronto’s Justin Gray Nominated for Grammy with Immersive Album
BREAKING: Justin Gray, a professor at Humber Polytechnic, has just made history as the first Canadian nominated for a Grammy in the Best Immersive Album category. His groundbreaking album, “Immersed,” features a stunning collaboration with 38 Toronto artists, bringing a unique 360-degree audio experience to listeners.
In an exclusive interview, Gray expressed his excitement about highlighting Toronto’s vibrant music community, stating, “I love the ability to highlight my friends, to let people know about artists they weren’t aware of.” This nomination is not only a personal achievement for Gray but a significant moment for Canadian music on a global scale.
The album, which blends jazz, Indian classical, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and more, is a true representation of Toronto’s diverse cultural landscape. Gray’s innovative approach to composition involved creating music specifically for individual artists, rather than generic instrument parts. “I write for people,” he emphasized, showcasing the deep connections he has with the musicians involved.
Gray’s immersive audio techniques have gained traction as demand for 3D sound experiences grows. “Immersed” is among the first albums to be created from the ground up with immersive audio in mind, rather than being adapted from existing recordings. This pioneering work sets a new standard for the genre.
The album has also received a Juno nomination for solo jazz album of the year, amplifying its significance in the music industry. With the Grammy awards set for later this year, Gray plans to attend with notable collaborators, including soul singer Aphrose. “I told her in high school that I’d take her to the Grammys,” Gray recalled, sharing a personal moment that highlights the joy of this achievement.
Gray’s work in immersive audio has already transformed notable tracks for artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Snoop Dogg, using advanced technology like Dolby Atmos to create a sound experience that surrounds the listener. “It’s not a literal process,” he explained, emphasizing his unique artistic vision.
Recorded over 35 days at Humber’s production studios, “Immersed” is a love letter to the Toronto music community. Gray’s extensive background in various musical traditions informs his work, allowing him to craft a cohesive, cinematic experience that resonates deeply with listeners.
As Gray prepares for the Grammy ceremony, he remains focused on the broader implications of his nomination. “There’s a lot going on in the world,” he stated, reflecting on the power of music to bring joy and connection. This historic nomination not only elevates Gray’s career but also shines a spotlight on the incredible talent emerging from Toronto.
Stay tuned for more updates as Gray approaches the Grammy awards, and join in celebrating this remarkable achievement for Canadian music!
