Trump to Criticize Allies at UN for Supporting Palestinian State
UPDATE: U.S. President Donald Trump is set to deliver a highly anticipated address at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday morning, where he will criticize American allies, including Canada, for their recent support of a Palestinian state. This urgent development comes as several nations have joined together to recognize Palestinian statehood, escalating tensions ahead of the assembly’s proceedings.
Earlier this week, Canada, alongside the United Kingdom, Australia, and Portugal, officially recognized an independent Palestinian state, prompting backlash from the U.S. administration. During a high-profile meeting on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron also announced France’s recognition of Palestinian statehood, further intensifying the diplomatic rift. Other nations, including Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and Monaco, have echoed this support.
In response, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump vehemently opposes this move, claiming it rewards Hamas for the violent attacks that erupted on October 7, 2023. Leavitt emphasized that recognizing a Palestinian state is “more talk and not enough action,” a sentiment Trump will likely express during his address.
In a related development, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked the visas of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, forcing him to deliver his remarks via video link on Monday. Trump’s upcoming speech is poised to address these significant geopolitical shifts and is closely watched by global leaders.
The theme of this year’s assembly is “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development, and human rights.” However, Trump’s administration has distanced itself from multilateralism, previously withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council and freezing U.S. funding. Just last week, the U.S. vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, asserting it failed to adequately condemn Hamas.
International observers, particularly from Canada and European countries, are keenly awaiting Trump’s remarks on Russia’s recent military actions, including incursions into Estonian airspace. This comes on the heels of alarming incidents involving Russian fighter jets and drones in neighboring countries. Trump previously claimed during his presidential campaign that he could resolve the war in Ukraine in a single day, yet the conflict persists, complicating diplomatic efforts.
Additionally, Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada is scheduled to attend the high-level debate and co-chair an event with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy focused on the abduction of Ukrainian children by Russian forces. Following Trump’s address, Carney will engage in discussions with other leaders and CEOs.
As the world prepares for Trump’s address, tensions surrounding the recognition of Palestinian statehood and ongoing conflicts reflect the complexities of international relations today. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
