TSB Launches Urgent Investigation into Damaged Nunavut Ferry

UPDATE: The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is urgently investigating a significant incident involving the Kivalliq W., a 129-metre ferry tanker owned by Coastal Shipping Limited, which suffered critical damage during a fuel transfer in Nunavut on October 15, 2023. This investigation comes as the ship was discharging diesel at a mine site, raising immediate concerns about safety protocols in the region.

Initial reports confirm that there were no injuries and no spills of hydrocarbons, as stated by Peter Woodward, CEO of the Woodward Group of Companies. However, the mechanical failure of the vessel has prompted swift action, with a replacement ship dispatched to continue operations after the incident.

As part of the investigation, TSB media relations co-ordinator Hugo Fontaine announced that investigators boarded the Kivalliq W. in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Wednesday, initiating the data collection phase. This phase involves collecting critical information, including witness interviews and examining the affected cargo tank.

“Field investigations typically encompass thorough documentation and data collection to determine how we classify this occurrence,” Fontaine noted. This investigation will follow a structured three-phase process: data collection, examination and analysis, followed by the reporting phase.
