Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe Acquires Elements Casino in Chilliwack
BREAKING: A coalition of First Nation communities from the Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe has officially acquired Elements Casino Chilliwack, marking a significant development in Indigenous business ownership. The agreement, reached on November 7, 2023, was announced in a press release from Great Canadian Entertainment on November 10.
Chief David Jimmie, leader of the Squiala First Nation and president of Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe Management Ltd., expressed profound excitement about this milestone. “This purchase marks an exciting milestone for our Nations and for the entire territory,” he stated. “By coming together in partnership, we are not only investing in a strong business opportunity, but also in the future of our people.”
The acquisition is poised to generate vital revenue for the Ts’elxwéyeqw communities, enhancing their economic resilience and creating new opportunities. Chief Jimmie emphasized that this local ownership will bolster the broader Fraser Valley community and economy, showcasing how Indigenous leadership can pave the way for a more inclusive future.
In a statement, Matt Anfinson, CEO of Great Canadian Entertainment, shared his enthusiasm about the transition. “We believe that under the Ts’elxwéyeqw Group’s stewardship, the business will begin an exciting new chapter,” he said. “We look forward to the closing and then working with the Ts’elxwéyeqw Group team during the transition period.”
The Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe consists of seven First Nation communities and is recognized as the First People of the Chilliwack River watershed. This acquisition reflects a “transformational milestone” for these communities, solidifying their role in the local economy and ensuring sustainable growth for generations to come.
The sale of Elements Casino, which has been part of the Chilliwack landscape since its opening in 2012, is seen as a pivotal move towards self-determination and economic empowerment for the Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe. As the deal progresses, local residents and stakeholders are eager to witness the positive changes this ownership will bring.
