Two Dead, One Critical After Rideshare Crash on Hwy. 400
UPDATE: A tragic accident on Hwy. 400 in Vaughan has left two people dead and one critically injured after a collision early Sunday morning. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed the incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. involving a transport truck and what is believed to be a rideshare vehicle.
According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, two men, both 30 years old from Bradford, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, a 50-year-old man from Toronto, was rushed to the hospital in serious condition and remains in critical state. The driver of the transport truck was reportedly unharmed.
Initial investigations suggest that the driver of the rideshare vehicle was heading northbound and potentially lost control while attempting to turn onto Teston Road. After hitting a crash cushion, the car bounced back into traffic, where it was struck by the oncoming transport truck. At the time of the crash, the roads were described as “dry and bare,” although snowfall began shortly after the incident.
Sgt. Schmidt stated, “I do not believe weather conditions were a factor at this time,” as authorities continue their investigation. All northbound lanes on Hwy. 400 at Major Mackenzie Drive are currently closed, with significant delays expected. The on-ramp to the northbound lanes is also facing a lengthy closure, police reported around 7:15 a.m..
Emergency services, including a coroner, are on-site, and road closures are anticipated to last until noon. This developing story highlights the urgent need for caution on roadways as investigations unfold. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
